The Leesburg Flower & Garden show was a great success this year with over 30,000 visitors. The Loudoun County Volunteer Rescue Squad were there in force with Ambulance 613-1 and Bike Team 13 making sure everyone stayed safe. Children received hundreds of Junior EMT helmets and were intrgued by the ambulance tours. “Words cannot express the gratitude I have for saving my sons life” commented by the woman whose family is pictured above. It turns out that Rob (the boy in the green shirt on the left) was transported by Loudoun Rescue to INOVA Lansdowne and later flown to Washington Hospital Center for a life threatening condition. We were all relieved to see Rob having a great time. That is what it’s all about at Loudoun Rescue and that’s what we do! It’s happy endings like this that make our sacrifices worth it. Leesburg Mayor Kristen Umstattd stopped by to visit and thanked us for our service.

Extrication Drill

The Loudoun County Volunteer Rescue Squad coordinated a hands-on training exercise instructing members about the technical details of vehicle extrication. Operating extrication equipment, wearing personal protective gear and coordinating rescue efforts ensures a successful drill and prepares them for actual rescues.

2012 Resolution Race

The Leesburg Rotary Club and REHAU, a global company headquartered in Leesburg, coordinated the 15th Annual Resolution Race at Ida Lee Park on New Years Day. Patty Russell and Dave Galen of the Loudoun County Volunteer Rescue Squad provided EMS stand by services ensuring that participants made it through without incident.

Holiday Parade

Despite the brisk weather, thousands of parade watchers lined King Street today to ring in the holidays. The Loudoun County Volnteer Rescue Squad and Auxiliary participated in the festivities by displaying Canteen 13, the Special Emergency Response Vehicle and Ambulance 613-4 in the parade. The Rescue Squad is pleased to be a part of the community and is grateful for their continued support.

Team Building

Carolyn Trent, an EMT at Loudoun Rescue, spearheaded a food drive at the squad to benefit Loudoun Interfaith. Carolyn wanted this drive to be hugely successful so she challenged each crew to bring in as much food as they could carry to the December membership meeting. ”There’s nothing like a little friendly competition to promote team building all for the benefit of a great local cause.” Amazingly, the total take was 367 pounds of food with the Wednesday night crew winning with more than half the collection. The rescue squad is proud to help Loudoun Interfaith and now plans to run food drives every six months. Way to go Wednesday night crew and congratulations Carolyn!

Halloween Parade

Each Halloween since 1957 the Leesburg Kiwanis have sponsored the Halloween Parade down King Street in Historic Downtown Leesburg. Leesburg’s Annual Halloween Parade is the longest running parade east of the Mississippi and certainly the best way to celebrate Halloween! The floats, bands, and costumes are awarded prizes. The parade featured over 200 police, fire and rescue units; high school marching bands; floats; horseback riders; walkers; decorated vehicles; and politicians, passing out candy as they paraded down the one mile route. These units and many spectators donated over 1,000 pounds of food and hundreds of dollars to Loudoun Interfaith Relief.

Balls Bluff Reenactment

For the first time in 150 years, 1000 Union and Confederate re-enactors participated in an “engagement” commemorating the Sesquicentennial of

the Loudoun County battle. Members of the Loudoun County Volunteer Rescue Squad visited encampments, witnessed live engagements with canon fire, and viewed soldier and civilian life during the period. The squad is grateful to the numerous volunteers that assisted during the standby and always stands ready to help the community.

Leesburg Air Show

Despite miserable weather conditions, members of the Loudoun County Volunteer Rescue Squad were on hand to show their support at the Leesburg Annual Air Show. Two medic units, an EMS Gator, and a First Aid Trailer were on stand by during the event. The air show got underway with 2 skydivers jumping out of a perfectly good aircraft during a break in the weather. A crop duster and a Navy jet fighter dazzled the audience with aerial acrobatics and supersonic speed before officials ended the show due to rain and poor visibility. Loudoun Rescue was delighted that their services were not required but it’s comforting to know they are always there when you need them.

9/11 Memorial

First responders throughout Loudoun County were recognized for their dedication on the 10th Anniversary of 9/11. Pastor Eugene W. Nichols of the Loudoun Baptist Temple presented the Loudoun County Volunteer Rescue Squad with a proclamation recognizing the service and sacrifies of the squad members. Chief Wagner Grier, Fred Caprio, and Lt. David Galen attended the memorial service and were treated to a picnic hosted by the church. Later that day, the Sunday Day Crew attended a community picnic at The Leesburg Community Church once again recognizing first responders. The Leesburg Volunteer Fire Dept., the Leesburg Police Dept., the Leesburg Police Auxliary and the Leesburg Police Explorer group participated in the festivities. The Rescue Squad is grateful for the public recognition and looks forward to serving the citizens of our community. When you need us, we are there.

911 Motorcycle Ride

Elizabeth Baroody and Karland Moore of the Loudoun County Volunteer Rescue Squad participated in the 911 motorcycle ride on Friday August 18 commemorating the lives sacrificed on September 11, 2001. They both drove the squad’s Special Emergency Responce Vehicle from Somerset, PA through Leesburg to the Pentagon and then north to ground zero. The Squad’s Heavy Rescue truck also participated in part of the ride through Leesburg. An estimated 2000 motorcycles, and hundreds of first responders from several states participated with assorted fire, rescue and police vehicles throughout the parade. Local supporters lined the Evergreen Mill Road and Shreve Mill Road overpasses on the Dulles Greenway.
